In AI the work tends to be a scoped research or engineering project you own end to end: a training pipeline, an evaluation harness, a model improvement someone actually ships. Most AI internships are paid well, and a good number turn into a return offer, which is the real reason to chase them.
Earlier than most students expect. AI labs and chip companies open their summer internship programs six to twelve months ahead, so applications for a summer start usually go live between August and December of the year before, and popular ones close once they're full rather than on the stated deadline. That's why postings on this page already name 2026 and 2027 start dates. The practical advice: apply the week a posting appears, not the week before the deadline.

Chip and infrastructure companies tend to run the largest, most structured internship programs, defence and robotics companies hire steadily across the year, and the frontier labs run smaller, more competitive residencies and research internships. Every listing comes straight from the company's own careers page, so what you see is what they're actually hiring for today.
We index the careers boards of the companies on this site, including Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, so when they open student roles those appear here automatically within a day. The honest caveat: the biggest labs run their internship and residency programs on their own calendar and often for a few weeks only, so on any given day some of them will have nothing open. Set a job alert for intern roles and you'll hear when that changes.
Yes — that's what these roles exist for. What replaces work experience is evidence you can build: coursework projects, a paper, a Kaggle placing, an open-source contribution, a model you trained and wrote up honestly. Two or three specific projects with real numbers attached beat a page of adjectives every time. If your resume is mostly coursework, run it through our free checker first; the checks that catch student resumes are usually the same three.
Some, but fewer than you'd hope: 4 of the 65 internships open here are remote right now. AI internships lean on-site or hybrid because the work involves shared compute, unpublished research and a mentor sitting nearby. If you need remote, filter for it and set an alert rather than refreshing — remote student roles appear and fill quickly.
Not for most of them. 6 of the 65 internships currently open name a PhD, and those are research residencies. The rest are engineering internships open to undergraduates and master's students. If a posting asks for a PhD it will say so plainly in the title or the requirements, and our match check will flag it against your profile before you spend an evening on the application.
