Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. Job Description:  

  

The Datacenter Engineering Design Manager will manage the engineering scope, schedule, and budget for greenfield, brownfield and retrofit engineering / design projects.  This specific position will support our network and regional growth in the North-East Asia region and this position will manage internal and external resources for the delivery of the Datacenter building, power, cooling, telecom, and controls infrastructure to align with Microsoft Corporation datacenter capacity roadmap for the APAC region.   

   

The Datacenter Design Manager will be responsible for the facilitation and delivery of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs including the development of innovative technology and advanced concepts from Site Due Diligence through design development, permitting, construction, and the turnover to Operations.  This role will provide design management, technical direction, decision-making and overall leadership for our datacenter designs. To be successful in this role the candidate will oversee the delivery of multiple, concurrent, complete Datacenter design solutions aligned with the scopes, schedules, and budgets of the projects.  The Design Manager will engage with key MS stakeholder groups within Microsoft as well as outside vendors who specialize in datacenter architecture and engineering.    



Responsibilities
  • Support the network growth/upgrade refresh project pipeline across the APAC Region, specifically:
    • Investigation and project scoping
    • Working with external and internal stakeholders to undertake feasibility study
    • Provide findings and internal reporting from the feasibility study, and provide proposed solution and programme
    • Implementation management and overseeing compliance to the execution process
  • Support built pipeline, including:
    • Coordinate a team of architects, engineers and designers and deliver projects aligned with the defined scope, schedule, and budget.    
    • Collaborate with on-site operations teams to perform feasibility / Gap analysis for conversion of existing data center spaces to new / upgraded uses. 
  • Have excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.   
  • Possess a high level of proficiency in commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter design.    
  • Must be able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament.   
  • Must be a person of integrity, be methodical, detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.  


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field (i.e. Project/Programme Management)   
  • Technical understanding of mission critical environments on a multidisciplinary level
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.   
  • Experienced and has the ability to lead team of architects and engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large data center environments.    
  • Experienced with design & construction procurement and contract
  • Fluency in Japanese and English language skills

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in engineering, equipment and/or construction for mission critical or hi-tech industry   
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as project or team manager

These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
