About the team and the role

The Foundation Models team builds next-generation Generative AI capabilities and products that power intelligent experiences across eBay at global scale. We work across the full AI lifecycle, from applied research and model development to evaluation, optimization, productionization, and integration into customer-facing products and platform capabilities.

We are looking for a Senior Manager, Machine Learning Engineering - Generative AI to lead a team of applied researchers and machine learning engineers. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who is equally comfortable exploring state-of-the-art AI approaches and turning them into scalable, reliable products. You will set technical direction, develop and grow the team, and work closely with product, engineering, and platform partners to take ideas from research and experimentation all the way to production.

What you will accomplish

• Lead a team of applied researchers and machine learning engineers delivering end-to-end Generative AI capabilities and products, from research and experimentation through production deployment and continuous improvement.
• Set the technical direction for the team and remain hands-on in solving challenging problems across LLMs, multimodal models, agents, retrieval and context, model adaptation, and learning from feedback.
• Turn promising research and prototypes into scalable production systems, making pragmatic decisions across model quality, architecture, latency, cost, reliability, and maintainability.
• Build systems and practices for model training, post-training, evaluation, deployment, serving, and continuous improvement using user, human, and production feedback.
• Partner closely with product, engineering, research, and AI platform teams to identify high-impact opportunities and deliver AI capabilities that create measurable value for eBay customers.
• Hire, mentor, and grow a strong technical team while fostering a culture of scientific rigor, engineering excellence, experimentation, collaboration, and end-to-end ownership.

What you will bring

• 8-10 years of experience in machine learning and Generative AI, with a track record of developing and delivering ML-powered capabilities or products from experimentation through production.
• Experience leading and developing technical teams, with the ability to set direction while remaining sufficiently hands-on to contribute to technical decisions, experimentation, architecture, and implementation.
• Deep expertise in one or more areas such as Large Language Models, multimodal models, NLP, agents, post-training, reinforcement learning, or learning from feedback, combined with broad understanding of modern Generative AI systems.
• Strong machine learning engineering skills, including experience with model training or fine-tuning, evaluation, scalable data pipelines, deployment, inference, and production model serving.
• Strong software engineering foundation, including proficiency with Python and modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch, and the ability to reason about scalable and reliable production systems.
• Ability to operate effectively across research, engineering, and product, turning ambiguous problems into technical strategies and leading teams toward measurable customer and business impact.
