Sr. UX Designer

What you will do

As a Senior UX Designer for the Johnson Controls OpenBlue platform, you will help create intuitive digital experiences that support smarter, safer, and more sustainable buildings. Under the direction of the senior design leaders, you will focus on users' needs while collaborating across disciplines to define, document, and create innovative and intuitive experiences for our OpenBlue platform. To be successful in this role you will need to know how to understand the user and business goals, ask the right questions, and be able to produce effective deliverables. You will work collaboratively in an agile environment, helping shape requirements with product, engineering, and design partners to create experiences that meet customer needs, advance OpenBlue platform objectives, and support Johnson Controls’ mission to transform the spaces where people live, work, learn, and play.

How you will do it

• Clearly articulate, evangelize for user centricity, and leverage design thinking throughout the organization.
• Collaborate with other designers, researchers, and business partners to identify customer needs and design customer-focused solutions.
• Lead medium to large-sized projects.
• Lead small research initiatives and uncover findings to create data-informed design solutions.
• Create workflows, wireframes, prototypes, heuristic evaluations, personas, journey maps, and competitive assessments to explore ideas, validate solutions, and prepare designs for engineering. Apply research findings and existing data sources to inform project hypotheses and strengthen data-informed design decisions.
• Work with minimal direction and collaborate with the senior teammates and leadership.
• Build, maintain, and expand design component libraries by creating patterns aligned with WCAG standards and documenting UI patterns to improve consistency and adoption. 
• Help create AI design patterns that show when AI is used, when users should review or confirm AI output, and how to reveal AI content gradually to build user trust.

• Understand how design decisions connect to customer needs, product outcomes, and broader business value. 
• Use existing analytics to inform project plan and scope.
• Support junior team members by coaching and mentoring.
• Work closely with software developers and engineers to understand technical constraints and feasibility.

What we look for

Required

• Completed a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or advanced degree program.
• A life-long learner, who has a growth mindset with an understanding of user experience, design principles and methodologies.
• 8+ years Knowledge of industry standard wireframing, graphic design, usability and/or prototyping software.
• Proficient in UX/UI design and methodologies, communication, storytelling and problem solving.
• Basic understanding of accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.2AA) and best practices.
• Experience creating experiences across devices, including desktop, mobile web, mobile app, and enterprise software.
• Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to effectively manage time and estimate tasks.
• Capacity to ask insightful questions, actively listen and support teams.
• Comfortable interacting and collaborating with teammates across global teams.

Preferred 

• Curiosity about how AI tools can support research, ideation, prototyping, and everyday design tasks, with a willingness to learn, experiment, and build confidence with new ways of working.
